People are asking, “How do I become a Community Manager?”. “What does the job description look like?” What qualities do I need to have?

This is an emerging role so it varies greatly. My prediction is for two things:

  1. The role is going to become an integral part of companies as they adopt social media. (J. Owyang mentioned last week at his webinar on measurement that it requires a human component. Someone in the company needs to be monitoring & interpreting this information & that’s generally a Community Manager.
  2. Positions in the early stages now will be filled by motivated people.

Jake McKee recently did an excellent series on employment of Community Managers. If you’re interested in being a Community Manager, the following traits will serve you well:

  • self starter with excellent communication skills
  • not afraid to move mountains & follow thru on what you believe in
  • strategically opportunistic & ready to experiment
  • committed to excellent customer service & your company

There are 3 job boards to get started looking:

Chris Heuer has a list of Social Media Jobs.

Jake McKee has a board specific to Community Management

Jeremiah Owyang also has a job board on his blog.
