Today I had a chat on Skype with a new friend about why outbound links are important. At first glance it seems obvious that you want to keep readers on your site. Once you get a reader to your blog, site or community you want them to stay there right?
- Read the full post at the Marketing 2.0 blog.
- And join the community.
Hello,
I enjoy reading your blog.
But I did not understand what you ment by the words “outbound links”.
I am not familiar with the term
I am a 64 year old gentleman who is still learning about Social Media and Marketing.
Thank You. Patrick

I like your thoughts on this Connie but it makes me want to ask: does it really apply to large, commercial websites and their own communities?
I see how blogs or niche communities could benefit from these links but what if you already have excellent SEO in your field and are looking to build content? This is where I struggle: do I really want to send people away? What’s in it for my community when people post external links saying “oh, good question, come see my blog, I talk about this in it”? Are we building a larger community or are they simply using our good SEO to get traffic?
How do people handle it in more “commercial” communities, for example with the community you used to manage before?
Hi Patrick,
I’m referring to links in the post that send traffic away from your blog/site.
For example in this post – the first link is to the Marketing 2.0 blog. And the second link goes to the Marketing 2.0 community.
I always have links open in new windows because 1) I feel like people will browse my blog more after reading the linked post & 2) it’s a pet peeve of mine when reading someone’s blog & I lose the original blog post I was reading
Also, in this case I want to promote the Marketing 2.0 blog/community.
Chloe I’m going to write a blog post in answer to your questions – they are good ones!
