It’s happened! There’s no turning back now! It’s full speed ahead.
My network has grown to the point where I can’t follow it like I used to. It’s grown to 344 on Facebook & 309 on Twitter. And like the kitten, it’s time to readjust.
Beth Kanter asked me awhile ago about how I manage my networks. The big picture is a matter of time management & choices.
My use of Twitter has greatly changed. Twitter now stays closed during my work day. I used to be able to scan all pages & then open posted links. But now, I scan the most recent two pages & then will click on a certain person’s name to read their posts. I miss the small network of about 100. It’s interesting to me that I’m still connecting with the same people in the same way there.
Facebook always amazes me. The networking & options to participate in groups is endless! People from around the world come up in my friend requests. It makes for an interesting mix! But I haven’t been spending as much time as I used to there either.
My best suggestion is to ask yourself:
- What social networks are giving you value & are relevant?
- Where does spending time make sense for your needs?
- And are you enjoying the interactions & learning?
My guess is that the answers are going to be different for everyone. I’m working to find a mix that works for me. Please share your ideas!
You’ve nailed with those excellent reflective questions! I guess there is truth to the Dunbar number.
You mentioned scanning Twitter pages for links (in your old Twitter usage). Want to make sure you don’t miss what tends to be the good stuff (the links)?
With Tweeterboard.com, you can subscribe to a feed of links people post via tweets. Here’s a feed of your links. Pretty sweet.

Just pick the folks who’s links you don’t want to miss and subscribe to them separately.
